Here I am, nearly 12 months since the last posting on this site, happy to report that I am now in my second semester of Master of Teaching and Learning and I have just successfully completed my second last practicum. I spent the past four weeks learning to teach in a Steiner School year 6 classroom. The Steiner/Waldorf pedagogy is geared to address the psycho-social and emotional stages of childhood development, and to deliver a curriculum rich in arts, music, and creative inspiration appropriate to children’s needs as they grow through these stages. As a sensitive, creative, and spiritually oriented person, I naturally want to be an educator who takes care of the deeper aspects of the human being while guiding their learning – the Australian Steiner School curriculum and pedagogy gives me an opportunity to fulfill this inner need.
The main lesson (held during the morning session each day) moved from the Physics of Electrostatics and Magnetism to Astronomy while I was there and I experienced the joy of presenting a short sequence of lessons focused on the planets in our solar system.
Here are some images of the work the students and I accomplished during my short time in their classroom.
My heartfelt thanks to the class 6 students at Cairns Hinterland Steiner School and their wonderful guardian teacher for giving me the opportunity to learn necessary skills for my chosen profession in such a nurturing and creative environment.
